"EL ROI". What Does It Really Mean?
EL ROI.
El roi means the God who sees.
El(God) roi(see)
It is drawn from Hagar's wilderness encounter with God in Genesis 16:6-14, when she felt mistreated by her mistress Sarah & fled from her face.
"Beerlahairoi" - was Hagar's exact term ie. the name she called the Lord who spoke to her, as she realized the wonderful care of the Lord for her, how He had met her in her need when she was fleeing from her mistress.
"Beerlahairoi"
Transliteration: be'êr lachay rô'ı̂y
Origin: from be'êr(well), chay(living) and rô'eh(seer/vision)
"Beerlahairoi" means the well of the Living One seeing me; the Living One who sees me. That is what it is. It is the "well of Him that liveth and seeth" us, the well of God, the living water.
The well itself is figurative of the Holy Spirit; He is the living waters, the living One who is always with us and from whose presence/face we cannot flee/escape so we live by the well & before the well of the living One who sees us, who searches all things, all hearts and intents, and even the depths of God to bring us into knowledge & communion with God(John 7:38-39; 1st Corinthians 2:10). The psalmist in the consciousness of this said "whither shall I go from thy Spirit? and whither flee from thy presence? and again "search my heart..see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting". (Psalm 139:7 & 23).
Now in connection to the history of Hagar's place of encounter, Genesis 25:11 shows us something very interesting👇🏽
"And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac: and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi" (Genesis 25:11).
Well Lahai-roi = Beer Lahai roi because Beer is well.
What is striking here & worthy of note is that the child of the free woman, Isaac is the one who now dwells by this well.
As earlier noted, this well Lahai-roi, at which he dwells (at least, at this time it was his permanent abode) is the well where Hagar(the bond woman) met the angel of the Lord, where the angel of the Lord found her and ministered to her in her distress.
He ministered to her by the springing well which He discovers for her. But Isaac dwells there.
Isaac, the child of the free woman, Isaac, our representative - the one who is the true child of God according to the type, the one who has really the spirit of adoption, the one who has the full title, as it were, to the inheritance. He is the one who dwells by the well, in a living consciousness and awareness of the living God who sees him.
For him Lahai-roi was not just a place; a place of encounter where needs are met, as it was with Hagar(the bond woman), but where he dwells, continually in the presence/face of him who sees him...a life lived before God.
For some today, EL ROI has been taken up as a religious theme, but it should be a living revelation of God.
El ROI is not known in merely shouting El ROI, wearing wristbands or placing stickers bearing "El ROI" on doors & cars, neither is he known in merely crying to God to have your needs met, but abidingly living in the consciousness & awareness of the presence of the living One who sees & searches all things.
In Christ we are abidingly in the face of God, ever before God for scripture in Hebrews 9:24 says that Christ has not entered into holy places made with hands which are figures of the true, but into heaven itself, where he now appears before the face of God for us.
We are to live & walk/function in this consciousness, continually beholding by contemplating the perfection of purity God wrought for us in Christ, such that we are abidingly in the face of Him who is of purer eyes to behold iniquity - 2nd Corinthians 2:17 & Habakkuk 1:13.
May "El ROI" not be to us a mere yearly, religious theme on stickers and wristbands but a consciousness & awareness we live and walk in, knowing that we are always before the God who sees us.
