Be Not Moved Away From The Hope Of The Gospel.

There is the faith of the gospel of salvation and there is the hope of the gospel of salvation.

The faith of the gospel dwells on what God has wrought for us in Christ, what is ours in Christ now. What God has wrought for us is in Christ and not in ourselves; apart from Christ we have no access to what God has wrought for us; in ourselves apart from Christ we have nothing good; the apostle Paul in the 18th verse of Romans 7 says: "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing".
Another apostle(John) says in the fifth chapter of 1st John: "And this is the witness, that God has given to us eternal life; and this life is in his Son. He that has the Son has life: he that has not the Son of God has not life"(1John 5:11-12).

This life is in His Son, not in us/ourselves as custodians of it apart from the Son. The Son is the custodian of eternal life such that it is only in relationship with the Son that we have it.

What God has wrought for us & given to us thus being in another which is Christ, is yet a hope. One might say but Christ is in us, he dwells in us now, yes and scripture says that Christ in us is the hope of glory and that Christ is our hope - Colossians 1:27; 1st Timothy 1:1.

Sadly many who are not well grounded in the knowledge of the truth, teach and emphasise the faith of the gospel of salvation to the denial & denigration of the hope of the gospel of salvation; and this they do to their own peril/destruction and that of those who hear them.

Colossians 1:23
 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Many have moved away from the hope of the gospel and are thus making a shipwreck of their profession of faith(1st Timothy 1:19-20), for hope is the anchor(Hebrews 6:18-20).

How did Hymenaeus and Philetus make an overthrow/shipwreck of the faith of some believers?
Simply by casting away the hope of the resurrection of the dead in Christ, which according to scripture, will occur at the Lord's descent from heaven/coming for his own(1st Thessalonians 4:16-18).

Hymenaeus and Philetus were men who had already gone astray from the truth, teaching and asserting that the resurrection was a thing which had already taken place and not a thing to come, and this was a very grievous and costly erroneous doctrine, which overthrew the faith of those who belived what they were teaching.

Just how many preachers today have gone astray from the truth yet they are still in ministry, consistently teaching and preaching that which sounds like truth from the bible, but sadly they are only but messages/words which spread like gangrene, overthrowing the faith of believers who listen to them.

2nd Timothy 2:16-18
 But profane, vain babblings shun, for they will advance to greater impiety, and their word will spread as a gangrene; of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; men who as to the truth have gone astray, saying that the resurrection has taken place already; and overthrow the faith of some.
