Is There Anything Like Tongue/Language Of Angels?

Some argue that there is nothing like tongue/language of angels; that any tongue which is unintelligible to men & unfruitful to human understanding is gibberish & not in anyway an utterance of mysteries in the spirit.

If in the old testament, the church in the wilderness(Israel) ate manna the food of angels, unknown to men, it obviously takes unbelief for one to doubt that there is any such thing as tongue/language of angels, unknown to men and for which mortal men would need to be endowed with a spiritual gift to be able to speak and interpret.

The psalmist captures the experience of the children of Israel in eating manna in the wilderness thus:

Psalm 78:24-25

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

The phrase translated as "angels' food" in the common version is "abbı̂yr lechem" in the Hebrew which means 'mighty/valiant bread' (of angels, also used of men.

The Septuagint however, literally captures it as Angels food. The bread of heaven, the bread of the mighty" - bread that produces might/strength; just like the food in the strength of which Elijah went forty days and forty nights,(through this same wilderness), "to Horeb, the mount of God."

Cakes & meat prepared & given to him by an angel, and he went in the strength of the food for forty day and forty nights, clearly showing that it was not merely a natural food. 1st kings 19:5-8.

Now the apostle Paul referred to this manna as 'spiritual meat/food' in his epistle to the Corinthians(1 Corinthians 10:3), before going further to write about spiritual gifts in the 12th chapter.

1 Corinthians 10:3-6

And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

Just as Paul would not have them ignorant of this history of the fall of the children of Israel in the wilderness, same way he says he would not have them ignorant concerning spiritual gifts(Compare 1st Corinthians 10:1 & 1st Corinthians 12:1)

He evidently draws a parallel between the history of what happend in Israel's wilderness journey and our own journey/walk of faith today as the church of Christ.

The things that happened unto them are ensamples/types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the age are come.

Thus just as Paul would say of Israel that they all drank the same spiritual drink and ate the same spiritual meat(the food of angels) and yet were overthrown in the wilderness for God was not pleased with them; he could say to the Corinthian church that though they speak with the tongues of men and of angels and understand all mysteries and knowledge, they are nothing without love. Exposure to manifestations and spiritual gifts does not amount to maturity in spiritual life and character.

In essence he is saying that if Isreal, despite their exposure to spiritual manifestations, were overthrown in the wilderness for their moral laxity/sin; he that thinks he stands in the church today by virtue of being endowed with all spiritual gifts and knowledge, should take heed lest he fall(1 Corinthians 10:11-12).

Love which does not seek it's own, and which neither rejoices in iniquity is the moral excellence of character in conformity to the image of God and Christ, which all should seek and pursue much more than spiritual gifts(1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

Now, some vaguely dismiss Paul's introduction in showing the more excellent way in 1st Corinthians 13:1-2, as nothing but a mere hyperbole/figurative speech.

They fail to see that in the first chapter of his epistle to the Corinthians, the apostle acknowledged that the saints in Corinth were enriched in all utterance and in all knowledge, not lacking in any spiritual gift, and that was not a hyperbole(exaggeration) or figurative speech(1st Corinthians 1:5-7).

They thus assume that what he said to them in chapter 13:1-2 is merely a hyperbole or figurative speech and not a literal example of amazing feats/exploits and wonders which can be wrought with spiritual gifts?

Justapoxe & compare 1st Corinthians 1:5-7 & 13:1-2

1 Corinthians 1:5-7

"That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

1 Corinthians 13:1-2

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing."

*The apostle is clearly expressing the extent to which one can go in attainment & expression of spiritual gifts and yet be destitute of love.

Mind you he is writing to an assembly which he had earlier acknowledged that they lack behind in no spiritual gift; they were functioning in all spiritual gifts and enriched in all utterance and in all knowledge, yet with the setting in of divisions, worldly wisdom of sectarianism and walking according to men, they became carnal and were even as babes to whom Paul could not speak as unto spiritual.

To deny any such thing as tongue/language of angels which some do not believe in, they must of course twist & turn the apostle's statement into a hyperbole and figurative speech, and deliberately refuse to see how it was a literal example he gave of the extent to which one can attain & express the spiritual gifts he mentioned earlier in chapter 12, and still be destitute/bereft of love.

Earlier, in his epistle to the Corinthians, the apostle talked about speaking the wisdom of God in a mystery...

1 Corinthians 2:7

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

And in Ephesians 3:10 he says "To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God"

If through the spiritual gift of unknown tongues, we speak mysteries in the spirit, uttering/declaring the manifold wisdom of God in a mystery, and we do so in tongue of angels, then we should not find it difficult to understand how now(in this dispensation) the manifold wisdom of God is being disclosed by the church to the principalities and powers in heavenly places.

Even in the expression of the spiritual gifts in the church, the administration and order is to be maintained bearing in mind that angels are spectators/witnesses as they behold the manifold wisdom of God on display in the church(Just as Peter puts it: "they stoop to peer/look into the things" concerning our salvation and relationship with the indwelling HolySpirit sent down from heaven - 1 Peter 1:12).

The apostle Paul also hints on this in his epistle to the Corinthian church.

1 Corinthians 11:5-10

But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.  Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

He says, "the woman ought to have authority upon her head," -the sign of authority, -"on account of the angels." The angels are the witnesses of creation. They have seen from the beginning what God did.; They are acquainted with His thoughts with regard to man, as in an earlier chapter, the apostle says "we are a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men." 1 Corinthians 4:9.

Scripture is indeed clearly consistent in what it teaches and not vague/ambiguous as many seem to make it to be.
