Scriptures Mostly Misunderstood/Misinterpreted Part 1.
The Letter Killeth But The Spirit Giveth Life(2 Corinthians 3:6).
One of the most misunderstood verses of scripture is 2 Corinthians 3 verse 6 which says" Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
The latter part of this verse which is often quoted by many Christians is grossly misunderstood & explained out of context.
Most people merely pick up the last thread of this verse which says "the letter killeth but the spirit gives life" without reading the entire chapter to understand what the scripture actually means. The sad fact that many christians today are ill-disposed to contextual reading & giving attendance to reading of scriptures is largely traced to lack of patient diligence in studying the scriptures & misinterpretation of this very portion of scripture.

Many assume that it means just reading the bible without drawing any revelation/rhema out of it, offers one no life; that just reading the letters of scripture without revelation kills and does not profit anyone, however this is wrong and not what this scripture talks about.
First of all, the contextual reading of 2 Corinthians 3 clearly shows us the difference between the old and new testament.
The ministration of the old was that written and engraven in tables of stone. God wrote his laws on tablets of stone and delivered unto his people Isreal by the hand of Moses(Exodus 32:16; Deuteronomy 5:22) but the ministration of the new is that written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God and engraved in fleshly tables of the heart.
What God transmitted to the tables of stone in the old covenant is the Law(the 10 commandments, moral commandments) - Exodus 24:12. However in the new what God transmits to the hearts of men is not the law but Christ and this transmission is done not with ink but with the Spirit, just like a teacher can communicate/transmit his knowledge on a blackboard with a chalk thus God transmits Christ to hearts with d Spirit such that Paul could call the saints in Corinth "the epistles/letters of Christ ministered by us". The able ministers of the new testament are thus those empowered by the Spirit to transmit Christ.
In 2 Corinthians 3:6 it is the letters of the law(contextually the moral law of 10 commandments written on stones) that the scripture says that kills and not the letters of scripture thus in the next verse(7), it is called the ministration of death for the law written & engraven upon inanimate stones could not give/impart life - Romans 7:6 "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter."
Galatians 3:21 "Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law."

The law written and engraven in inanimate stones could not give life thus the law/letter kills.
The Beraen Jews who heard the word Paul preached and searched the scriptures daily to confirm if they are so, were not yet believers/christians, they had not the HolySpirit to interpret or give them spiritual revelation or life from scriptures yet they were diligent in studying/searching the scriptures and the inspired letters of scriptures did not kill them but rather led them to believe. Reading and studying the letters of the holy scriptures made them wise unto salvation by faith in Christ. They didn't merely believe because some great man of God preached, they did not carelessly believe in what they had not personally affirmed or been assured of; just as Paul admonished Timothy to continue in the things he had learnt and been assured of. He also recognised that from childhood Timothy had known the holy scriptures which are able to make him wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ.
Acts 17
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
2 Timothy 3
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction & instruction in righteousness. Giving attendance to reading of scriptures is one of the godly exercises Paul emphasized to Timothy as being profitable unto all things - 2Timothy 3:15-17 & 1Timothy 4:8,13.
Q: What of where the bible speaks of the unlearned and unstable who twist the scriptures to their own destruction, is that not an example of how the letter of scriptures can kill people who for lack of spiritual understanding of it twist it?
The unlearned and unstable spoken of in 2 Peter 3:15-17 are clearly those who are willingly/deliberately ignorant, having taken a wrong/ill-disposition to the word of God and the promise of the Lord's coming. They are morally presented as wicked men who just like the evil servant of Matthew 24:48-51 are ill-disposed to the hope of the Lord's return & it's imminence. They are scoffers walking after their own lusts mocking the promise of his coming and thus cannot give their hearts to understand what the scriptures have to say about it. They are thus willingly ignorant & cannot grasp the things Paul speaks of in his epistles, things which are hard to be understood, which they end up twisting/perverting deliberately to suit their own lust.
2 Peter 3
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
